The Unsinkable Spirit by Boris King & Shirley King

Broke in Hawaii

Jumping onto the dock, Jim let out a gasp. After 28 days of life at sea, he wasn't prepared for the feeling of solid ground. (Neither was young Trevor, who howled over the strangeness of the unyielding earth as loudly as he had howled over the gentle rocking of the waves when he had first come on board Nausikaa.)

But here they were. They had made their landing in Hawaii, safe and sound.

Amid all the riotous colors and smells and sounds of Hawaii, it was the food that drew everyone's attention. After a month with no refrigeration, Boris and Shirley and the others longed to feast on the hot dogs, ice cream, and fresh fruit that was suddenly all around them.

But after laying in provisions for the voyage, the Kings had been left with a total budget of $25. That wouldn't even buy basic groceries for very long.

Boris would have to find work, and soon. But where?
