The Unsinkable Spirit by Boris King & Shirley King

The Feel of an Eel

Scuba diving was a new kind of sea adventure for Boris. His friend Henry had volunteered to pay for his gear and lessons. Now Henry and Boris were under the waters off the island of Lanai, spearfishing by night.

Boris had become accustomed to deep-sea fishing, but this kind of fishing was tricker: his spear kept bouncing off the coral as shot after shot missed its mark.

Then he saw a large fish with its tail sticking out of a cave--an easy target. But as his spear sank with perfect aim into the fish's tail, he felt a jerk, as if the creature were trying to pull him into the cave. Struggling to see in the murky water, Boris eventually made out the situation all too clearly. The "fish" was a giant moray eel, and while he held its tail with the spear, its head, snaking around through an opening in the back of the cave, was trying to bite off his arm.
