The Unsinkable Spirit by Boris King & Shirley King

Impossible Dream

Everything was going right for Boris and Shirley, so it seemed. They had already achieved one of their dreams, spending a year traveling round the world. Now back in Canada, they had good jobs and a newborn son to raise.

But something was eating at Boris: a dream too wild to share even with Shirley. Since boyhood Boris had dreamed of a voyage that would retrace the steps of Captain Cook, visiting tropical islands and isolated native cultures in a grand sweep across the South Pacific.

It was completely crazy: Boris and Shirley had never taken any sailing lessons, they didn't have a boat, and they did have a son and two mortgages to think about. But Shirley told Boris it was all right to dream. Would Shirley be willing to take such a trip if Boris could ever make it possible? "Sure. Why not?" answered Shirley. To herself, she was thinking, "Sure, why not agree? There's no chance we'll ever really do it." Never did she suppose that they would ever board their ship of dreams.
