Boris's and Shirley's days of being broke in Hawaii were coming to an end. With their finances restored, they seemed set for the next leg of their grand adventure--the 11,000 miles from Hawaii to Australia.
Then one day Boris awoke with a sharp pain in his back. As he attempted his usual early-morning bike ride, the pain intensified till he could only stagger to the nearest hospital emergency room, begging for relief. After a couple of days, the diagnosis: Boris was suffering from a kidney stone. The pain was under control now, but Boris's dream voyage was suddenly up for grabs. How could he go out to sea, knowing that if he had another attack, he could be incapacitated, endangering himself and his crew?
Perhaps it was time to give up their sea adventure, to sell Nausikaa and return to Canada.
