The Unsinkable Spirit by Boris King & Shirley King

Leaving the Nest

Boris's father Jakob had worked his way up from poverty. Acquiring an education had been his passport to a new life and new respect in his Croatian community.

Now that Boris was 17, Jakob hoped that his son would also seek a better life through education.

But Boris had his own ideas about how to seek a better life. His sister Vera had already emigrated from Croatia to Canada, and was sending back reports about the good life in Canada, the opportunities, the money to be made. And it was Vera who lent Boris the money for a one-way plane ticket. The die was cast. And now, with $30 in his pocket and no words of English but "OK" and "thank you," Boris was on his way to North America, the land of opportunity.
