Within three days emigrating from his native Croatia to Winnipeg, Canada, in September 1971, with $30 and two words of English to his name, Boris had already landed a job assembling farm machinery for $1.75 an hour--a job of his own, a fabulous opportunity.

But it wasn't long before Boris learned more English and heard about the slaughterhouse across town. They paid $2.40 an hour.
But Boris had a job, and quitting it seemed like a leap into the unknown, just as he was finding a measure of security.
