"The only people who haven't been seasick are the ones that are going to be." The crew of Nausikaa soon learned the meaning of that saying as they headed out of Neah Bay, Washington into the rough seas that were the remnants of a storm just passed.
First it hit Shirley, then her brother Jim and his wife Ann, who were now part of the crew. While the ship bobbed and lurched in all directions, vomiting turned to dry heaves as one stomach after another emptied its contents over the rail.
Boris, at the wheel, felt as nauseous as anyone, but he swallowed his food back down as fast as it rose to his throat. He couldn't let himself be sick. After all, there were three young children on board, and he was the captain.
Still, doubts plagued him. Perhaps he and his family weren't ready for life at sea.
