As a young immigrant to Canada, Boris seemed to be moving up in the world when he exchanged his $1.75-an-hour job assembling farm machinery for a slaughterhouse job paying $2.40 an hour. It looked as if Canada was really was the land of opportunity.
But there were new challenges as well. The work was hard--shoveling away huge piles of coagulated blood, hosing down the area at night. That was all right: BOris was used to hard work from his days on his father's farm in Croatia.
A bigger problem was Boris's co-worker Bud, a large, muscular man who didn't like foreigners. One day Bud finally gave vent to his feelings, flinging a mass of cow innards in Boris's face.
Would Boris put up with the abuse or strike back against a large and dangerous
opponent? Boris's quick decision ultimately led to a transformation
of his workplace situation and a steppingstone on his way to an adventure
of love.
